About the Course

This advanced course on Participatory Research in Practice: Advanced Participatory Methods for Collective Action and Social Change is designed for learners who already have a foundational understanding of participatory research. It builds on that base to offer a deeper, critical exploration of the methodological, political, and ethical dimensions of participatory practice.

Learners will examine when, why, and for whom participatory approaches are most effective, engaging with advanced debates on power, knowledge production, ethics, representation, and action across diverse global and Indian contexts.

Drawing on international and Indian case studies, including PRIA’s pioneering work on participatory governance and citizenship rights, the course analyses complex field realities where participatory research intersects with state institutions, social movements, policy processes, and struggles for social justice.

Participants will explore advanced applications of Participatory Learning and Action (PLA), creative methods, and collective analysis, with emphasis on facilitation, conflict resolution, inclusion, and transformation, where communities are positioned not merely as participants but as knowledge producers and agents of change. Learners are encouraged to reflect critically on their own positionality as researchers, practitioners, or facilitators.

Objectives of the Course

• Critically examine the theoretical, ethical, and political foundations of community‑based participatory research (CBPR) in relation to conventional paradigms.
• Analyse power relations, positionality, and representation across diverse contexts, recognising how these shape knowledge and action.
• Design and facilitate advanced CBPR processes using Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) tools and creative participatory methods.
• Apply participatory research for community mobilisation, advocacy, and policy influence.
• Evaluate outcomes in terms of empowerment, sustainability, and long‑term transformation.
