Measuring Development: Participatory Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact Assessment

Home Online Self-Learning Courses

About the Course

How can we measure development? In recent years, concerns about effective management and results-oriented approaches to development projects and programmes have gained momentum. The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with their targets and indicators, has further intensified the focus on measuring the impact of development interventions. The message of “Leaving No One Behind” underscores the importance of inclusive and effective assessment strategies.

Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PM&E) is a crucial process that enhances the relevance, effectiveness, and sustainability of development programmes. It helps organisations and institutions improve their functioning by involving the primary stakeholders—the communities and beneficiaries—directly in the evaluation process.

This course emphasises:

  • Conceptual knowledge of PM&E
  • Exposure to frameworks and processes for implementing PM&E in development projects and organisational settings
  • Critical analysis of different debates and perspectives on PM&E.

Objectives of the Course

  • Develop a foundational understanding of Participatory Monitoring, Evaluation, and Impact Assessment
  • Acquire core competencies to implement PM&E processes within projects and organisations
  • Enhance knowledge of participatory approaches to monitoring and evaluating projects
  • Gain practical tools and ideas to independently conduct effective and meaningful PM&E
